Di Stefano was born in Argentina in 1926 in Buenos Aires. His father played for the leading Buenosayres club "River Pleit", but he abruptly cut off his career when football in Argentina became professional. For Di Stefano Sr., the game was fun, not a way to make a living. That is why he was not too pleased when his sons - Alfredo and Tulio - began their own football career in the youth teams of local clubs. “stopita” (the nickname his grandfather gave him) grew up playing with the guys on the street. They played leather balls, which cost two centavos.
Many years later, Don Alfredo said:
In my neighborhood, there were more than 40 guys who played better than me. But someone studied, someone went to work, and someone could not even buy a shoe.
His mother recommended Alfredo to scout "Rivera" and he did not pass by. On August 18, 1944, young Alfredo, nicknamed "El Aleman" ("German"), which he received for his blond hair, made his debut in "River Plate" in the position of right winger.
The idol of Di Stefano was Paraguayan central striker from Independiente Arsenio Eriko. Di Stefano himself wanted to be a center forward. He learned this “craft” at Hurakan, which rented it from River Plate, and then returned to his club, where he replaced the great Adolfo Pederner.
The River Plate attack line was called "la Maquina" ("car") - for the clear coherence of the actions with which it mercilessly crushed the defense of its rivals. Di Stefano showed his mastery of the attacker to the full in the national team, when in 1947 Argentina won the South American Championship.
In 1949, Argentine professional football players went on strike. Club management has locked them out and gained amateur players missing from the team. And the remaining “out of work” professional stars were lured away to Colombia, where they began to play in the “underground” league established outside FIFA jurisdiction.
The strike in Argentine football was designed to protect players in small clubs and lower divisions who were paid only for the first two months, and when things started to go bad, they stopped paying. The contracts that they signed were drawn up in bad faith. The player did not solve anything. We, being football players of large clubs, reacted to this and refused to play. We participated in charity matches for hospitals and schools, and in order to attract the attention of the public and explain face to face that it was not a question of money, this was done in order to protect those who did not earn anything.
Di Stefano was the first magnitude star in Colombia. He played for “Millionarios” from Bogota. When Colombia re-entered FIFA, “Millionarios” went on his last world tour, during which Di Stefano noticed the management of Real Madrid: he shone at a tournament dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Spanish club.
Madrid agreed with “Millionarios” about the amount of transfer, which exceeded the amount proposed by their long-time rival “Barcelona”, with the former club Di Stefano - “River Plate”. The Spanish football court ruled that Di Stefano should play one season for Real Madrid, the other for Barcelona, but Di Stefano started the season fairly pale, and Barcelona, not impressed with his game, sold his share of football ownership to "Real". Four days later, Di Stefano made a hat-trick in a match against ... Barcelona, which Madrid won with a crushing score of 5:0. So the legend was born.
20 years, “Real” could not win the championship of Spain. With Di Stefano, the team began to punch champion titles one by one.
In the first two seasons, Di Stefano in Real Madrid was the champion of the country, and in his next five seasons, the European Champions Cup winner Di Stefano scored goals in each Real finals in the European Cup and made a hat-trick in the legendary match with Frankfurt. Eintracht "in 1960 - a match that entered the history of football as one of the most exciting and spectacular.
Di Stefano became the embodiment of "total football" even before the term was coined. He moved around the field like an arrow, rapidly striving for a goal. Here he stands in the position of a defender in his own penalty, the next second he is already in the center of the field, and after another instant he hits the net from the corner of the opponent's goalkeeper. As said Miguel Muñoz, a long-time fellow “Real Madrid” Di Stefano, both as a player and as a coach:
When Di Stefano went on the field, he alone played for two, and in any position.
This happened in the early morning of August 26, 1963. Real Madrid was touring Venezuela, we stayed at the Potomac Hotel in Caracas. They went up to the room and introduced themselves as police. Revealed icon. There were three or four of them. They put me in a car and said it was a kidnapping. I was blindfolded. We spent no more than an hour in some apartment. Then they took me to the farm in a truck.
I was given a juice and two packs of cigarettes. And again in the car. They brought me to the apartment, which, judging by the noise, was supposed to be somewhere in the city center. I was locked in a tiny room without a bed. Nearby there was always a man who was guarding me, day and night. He fell asleep, and I had to wake him up and say: "Who among us is stalking, you or me?" On the first night three more came with machine guns. I did not sleep. I sat down and killed time, looking at the white shoes. Thought they were going to make short work of me, that they were going to kill me. My head gave up before my body, I thought that they could shoot at any moment. We were on the ground floor and I was tempted to jump out the window. Three days, seventy hours I spent locked up. They treated me well. They said that the students. Later I realized that they were from the Front of National Liberation. I played checkers, chess. I turned on the radio. Gave to read the newspaper. They even offered me paella, but I only ate hot dogs. My stomach clenched in fear.
On the morning of the third day I realized that I would be released. I changed clothes, they gave me a hat so that would not recognize me. I asked to be dropped off near the Embassy of Spain, and there I took a taxi. I promised that I would never say anything against them. When I came to the Embassy, I saw a sign: "Open from 10 to 2". It was 2.15. I kept my finger on the bell until opened.
In 1963, it was Di Stefano who entrusted the captain's armband to the world team, which held the match with England in honor of the 100th anniversary of English football. The star team, besides himself, included Kopa, Puskas, Eusebio, Lowe ... Lev Yashin defended the gates in the first half, who did not miss a single ball, Yugoslav M. Shoshkich in the second. Won the English birthday with a score of 2:1.
In 1964, after the “Real” again lost in the final match of the European Champions Cup Italian “Inter” - 1: 3, a great football player left the club, which spent eleven years. He was offered a very lucrative Scottish "Celtic" contract, but di Stefano did not want to leave Spain, to which he was accustomed. For two seasons, he still played in Barcelona "Espanyol".
In 1965 he again played in the national team of the world in a farewell match in honor of the great English football player Stanley Matthews. And finally, when he was already forty, he decided to switch to coaching.
I decided to end my career at the age of 40 because I didn’t want to hear from my daughters: "Dad, you're 40 years old and you don’t fit shorts".
In his career as a coach, there were ups and downs. He left Spain for Argentina, came back to leave again and return again. He visited Lisbon, where he was the coach of the Sporting. In Argentina, at various times, he led the Boca Juniors and his native River Plate to the champions. In Spain, he won the championship with "Valencia", twice for some time headed the Madrid "Real".
The last time it happened in 1990. Alfredo di Stefano was the honorary president of “Real”. He is the recognized patriarch of Spanish football, the real pride of the country.
The first heart attack occurred with Di Stefano at 79 years of age. On July 5, the day after the celebration of the 88th anniversary, he was hit by a new heart attack, and in a critical condition, Di Stefano was taken to the hospital for the intensive care unit. The attack happened on one of the streets of Madrid, near the stadium "Santiago Bernabeu". For 18 seconds the breath of the great footballer stopped. But his doctors could not save he , after 2 days he died.
The administration of Real Madrid has decided to assign a T-shirt with the 9th game number to the legendary striker and honorary president of the club Alfredo di Stefano.Сlub president Florentino Perez told Marca Edition:
His legend will live forever. An exceptional footballer deserves exceptional treatment, and his 9th number will be immortalized. In Ajax, the 14th game number of Johan Cruyff is out of circulation in Napoli, the 10th number of Maradona; in Inter, the Quartet of Zanetti; and in Schalke, the 7th number of Raul. But none of them played such a decisive role, as did di Stefano in "Real".
Add, in recent years, under the 9th game number stands the French striker Karim Benzema.
